Mealticket
Lisa Marie (Asian Man Records)

By: Alex Steininger

Mealticket combines ska with power pop to form a beautiful collage of skankin' beats, melodies, and hooks. With their latest 3 song EP on Asian Man Records they deliver the goods.

"Lisa Marie," starts off the EP. It starts out with beautiful horns, and then the great female vocals come on. The vocals are so strong and sweet they melt your heart away. Maybe it's my weakness for female vocals, but I love her voice. Fast and energetic horns play a big part in the song, while the guitar goes from skankin' beats to powerful hooks in a matter of seconds. And during the choruses they will throw in some power pop and grab you by the neck. These extra, rocking bits in the song add a nice feel. The song is up beat and will put a smile on your face. You'll enjoy every moment of the song. "Picture This" brings us some tasty ska you will just want to sink your teeth into. The beautiful vocals add such an innocent touch to the song, but when she needs to she can add a bite to the song as well. The guitar will get your feet up and skankin', while the horns will feed you the energy you need to keep on going. The drums add power to the song, while the bass adds depth and pulls everything together. The CD ends with "Parachute." This song is heavier than the other two. It turns up the speed a bit, and adds more of a rock feel to it. A strong close to a great CD.

With a talented front women and a strong band behind her, expect to see Mealticket in the future. This band has a great future, and this CD gives you a great idea of what they are all about. Do yourself a huge favor, and get this CD. I'll give this CD an A. It could have gotten an A+, but with only three tracks it's a little short for that.
