Nile
Amongst the Catacombs of Nephren-Ka (Relapse Records)

By: Jeb Branin

NILE has been the hottest thing in the unsigned underground for a couple of years now. The good folks over at Shadows of Michelangelo zine first started telling me to track this band down back when this publication was still on paper. Now everyone can enjoy the Egyptian death squad, because NILE have made the jump to one of the underground's premiere labels,Relapse. NILE's enigmatic brand of mayhem infuses a variety of ethnic musical touches and indigenous instruments into their raucous riffs and frenzied delivery. Picked up any albums this week with human skull drums or thigh bone flutes? No? Well then, you better exhume some funds from your mummy and track down "Amongst the Catacombs of Nephren-Ka." Of course, none of their musical experimentation gets in the way of their delivering the goods with all the pure conviction and destructive glory of the finest death merchants on the planet. Lyrical themes center around Egyptian history and myth with an emphasis on the darker side of the coin.
