Skinnerbox
Hepcat Season 7" (King Django/Stubborn Records)

By: Alex Steininger

Replying to Hepcat's "Open Season...Is Closed," Jeff Baker (a.k.a King Django) and his Skinnerbox troupes took the chance to start off King Django's vinyl-only label with "Hepcat Season."

Talk is cheap, but this seven inch backs up every statement Jeff makes. Tight horns over a traditional number, although very tasty, the music isn't the main attraction here. Django's lyrics and voice are the true calling for this song, as he goes off on Hepcat's Alex Desert and lets him know who the true "king" of the ska DJ world really is. Proclaiming himself as Desert's lyrical papa, he also makes comments regarding Desert checking him out with his band years ago and digging his ska then, and now trying to take a shot at him? Rattling all this off with speed, Jeff clearly proves his case and closes the book on Hepcat's claim to the DJ throne.

Also on the 7" is "I Got To Know," a song that shows what Skinnerbox is all about. The upbeat is sharp, driving right to your feet and getting you to dance, while the drums and bass form a tight rhythm section. Horns pass through the song smoothly, and Django's voice helps to bring the song together. Two more tracks on Skinnerbox's already extensive list of great cuts.
