Far
Water & Solutions (Epic Records)

By: Jeb Branin

About four or five years back I had the privilege of seeing FAR live in a tiny bar in Salt Lake City. They were in town with no scheduled gig trying to talk their way onto a bill. They managed to secure a spot opening for THE DOG FACED HERMANS and were tremendous! They hocked their demo tape from the stage, seemed to have fun playing for the five people who were there, and rocked like there was no tomorrow. I was an instant fan. The years rolled and FAR became a major label act, which brings us to the review at hand. "Water & Solutions" is FAR's sophomore disc for Epic. Time has smoothed most of the rough edges from their music and the band seems less angry and far (sorry) more introspective these days. The music is still diamond hard and the distinctive quirkiness of the band's arrangements is still intact, however the music now demands more of a commitment from the listener. Subtleness has replaced brute force. Covertness has supplanted overtones. Sentiment reigns over attitude. It's an evolution of the revolution and you can count me in.
