Ahriman/Vae Victis
Split 7" (Satan's Pimp Records)

By: Jeb Branin

What a great split! Two bands who play on two different sides of the same coin. Both take influences from AmRep style noise and merge it with heavy handed hardcore. The result is a not-quite-grind blast of severity and distortion. AHRIMAN are more pounding and direct in their approach and VAE VICTIS have a bit more restraint and more noise rock influences. Both bands are like a brass knuckled smash to the mouth and neither band is doing anything cliche. I don't know much about VAE VICTIS but AHRIMAN have been together only about a year and you would never know it to hear this record. I'm guessing that the members must be veterans of the underground scene because this is a tremendously mature display. Both bands are tight in all the right places and loose and visceral in all the right places. This may be one of the best splits out his year.
