Horrid Sights of Hate (cassette demo)

By: Jeb Branin

Underground American death metal is not the healthiest it has ever been but it is certainly still alive and kickin'. The Georgia based act VASTION are proof of that. Their new demo is a four song explosion of pure unabashed death. Raw and primitive sounding, they are purists at heart. No atmospheric or orchestral embellishments, just brutal music. Sometimes technical, sometimes just pounding VASTION show that if executed with passion and power this style of music can be as vital today as it was almost a decade ago. Solid song writing is the strength of the band although their vocalist's manic throat calisthenics are definitely impressive. He bounces back and forth between a low growl and a screech thus adding variety to his delivery. This also give the impression of a deranged mental state - you gotta love that. The linear notes don't mention two vocalists so I am assuming this is all the work of Craig Nest - so all hail the Nest.
