Nevermore
Dreaming Neon Black (Century Media)

By: Jeb Branin

NEVERMORE are one of those bands I can always count on. They never deliver anything less than a stellar release. "Dreaming Neon Black" is no exception. In fact this may be their strongest to date. Warrel Dane's vocals are once again the centerpiece of the album. His extremely powerful voice runs easily through several octaves without sacrificing any of the intensity and expressiveness that has marked his work since his days fronting SANCTUARY. The sharp staccato guitar work is intact and yet is expanded greatly this time around. The guitars provide a stunning amount of depth and texture thanks in no small part to the crystal clear production of Neil Kernon who captures every subtlety of sound while not sacrificing any of the music's aggression. The rhythm section gets a huge boost on this recording. Every thunderous beat is given emphasis. The low end is thicker and more alive than on any previous NEVERMORE recording. The song writing is more complex than ever and yet is delivered in such a forceful and direct manner that it has as much punch as simple chest pounding anthems would. This is pure heavy metal evolved to a higher plateau.
