Sky Cries Mary
Until the Grinders Cease (World Domination)

By: Alex Steininger

Originally released in 1989 by the European label New Rose, UNTIL THE GRINDERS CEASE is the band's first recording. Finally released in the US, after years and years of being out-of-print, Sky Cries Mary fans will rejoice (though, a large majority, I'd bet, have obtained bootlegged or high-priced copies of the New Rose release).

Now, if you're not familiar with Sky Cries Mary, they're best described as an art band that crosses noise, ambient, and industrial paths to come up with their highly influential sound. But, to be honest, I've never understood them. As I sit here listening, and have done a few others times, I just can't put myself into the music and really get into it. Its whole existence escapes me; I can't grasp what it is all about. That being said, this disc just didn't do it for me. It is too wide-open. It had a very experimental art feel too it and consisted of plenty of space filled with various noises to create the sounds it wanted, and that was lost on me.

Fans of Sky Cries Mary, no doubt, will jump for joy at this release. And others who haven't heard of Sky Cries Mary, but are interested in checking out some experimental sounds, will find some pleasure here too. But I just couldn't. I'll give it a C-.
