Hill Stomp
the cree.p. (Hillstomp Music)

By: Alex Steininger

Portland, Oregon's minimalist duo Hill Stomp pay homage to the blues by creating a sparse, loose sound led by the voice of Henry Kammerer, who's voice conjures up an old, weary tone straight outta the Delta region. All while percussionist and backing vocalist John Johnson plays a makeshift drum set, complete with a kick drum and plenty of oddities, to give the songs the grit and dirt under the nails feel. The cree.p. is a strong debut from this blues duo that neither sounds white nor out of place, two good things when it comes to bands that try to channel the spirits of blues legends - and expect to pull it off. Thankfully Hill Stomp does. I'll give this a B.
