Lair of the Minotaur Carnage (Southern Lord) By: Jeb Branin
I'm sitting in a hotel room in downtown Chicago as I type this and certainly there isn't a better place to be while reviewing the debut offering Carnage from LAIR OF THE MINATUAR. LOTM is the windy city's latest addition to the blood-soaked tome of maniacal death metal. Make no mistake, this monstrous three piece is the hammer and your fragile cranium is the anvil. LOTM eschews progressive and modern influences, opting instead to pay homage to the first wave of blood-thirsty death metal. LOTM has the raw and punishing vibe of DISMEMBER, the pacing variety of ASPHYX (thus recognizing the too oft forgotten reality that it doesn't always have to be fast to be death), and the keen sense of lyrical imagery ala ENTOMBED and UNLEASHED. Greek mythology is the subject of choice for LAIR OF THE MINATUAR and the dark and fiendish take on the stories leads me to believe LOTM would be more comfortable amongst the warriors of Sparta than the poets of Athens. Needless to say, only fans of the purest death metal dare seal their fate by entering the Minatuar's lair.
