The Gravy
Hangman's Pop (Q Division Records)

By: Alex Steininger

The Gravy is led by former Cavedogs frontman, Todd Spahr. Mixing classic rock, 60's pop, modern power pop, and psychedelic music of the past they come up with their own sound, which I guarantee has never been done before.

The Gravy has a unique sound, which right there should earn them some credit and praise. They don't go into any trend, or fit into any one musical category. They are diverse and have the power to blend or jump from style to style. I really respect that about them, and they deserve a lot of credit for that. Having said that, I find their music dull and empty. They have some energy, but it gets lost in between the noise and passing melodies. The hooks aren't addictive, and don't move you in any way, shape, or form. The melody won't drive you to do anything crazy, or provoke you to get up and move. Even when they try to get fast and energetic, the overall tone of the music hinders any activity that might have been brought to the surface. Songs like "Memory," "Pretty Krishna," and "Sissy Blood" are mediocre at best. This album just didn't flow right, and the music wasn't interesting. It sounded like a rough psychedelic-60's pop band's demo tape. For their originality and risk enough to try something new I'll give these guys a C.
