Songs For The Jet Set

(Jetset Records, 740 Broadway, Second Floor, New York, NY 10003)
By: Gary

Things have gotten so ridiculously retro lately that even my dad's old Jackie Gleason albums have become much sought-after trash at the trendiest of record conventions. Let's set aside (for now, anyway) the moral and artistic repugnance inherent in certain cool indie labels spending far too much time and cash promoting old cocktail collections while heaps of good NEW bands languish in obscurity and turn our attention instead to this delightful little confection from Britain, shall we? Songs For The Jet Set promotes itself as "space age new wave done today", and at first one might think they've uncovered the soundtrack to some great lost Roger Vadim flick circa 1966,, in fact, a cover of Roger's ode to his Sixties wife Jane Fonda does appear herein, as does a plethora of Girl From Ipanema meets Claudine Longet make-out shuffles that wouldn't sound terribly out of place on Matt Helm's hi-fi console. But this disc's saving grace is its generous helping of terrifyingly adept electro-exotica, best of which is Fantastic Everlasting Gobstopper's "Schoolgirl Psychedelia": a lysergic-soaked Stereolab wet-dream come to full-range stereophonic life if ever there was one! It's tracks like this, despite all the cool Cowsills and Spanky & Our Gang retreads which surround it (the kinda sounds Marcia Brady no doubt dug when she should've been doing her homework), that help lift this project defiantly out of Loser's Lounge mode to produce a collection so correctly kitsch that, well, it's so far out it's IN ...as they used to say.
