ADZ
Transmissions From Planet Speedball (Amsterdamned Records)

By: Jeb Branin

In a former life this band was the legendary punk outfit the ADOLESCENTS. Now their name is smaller and, frankly, so is their appeal. Although Tony and the boys are still playing punk in the same vein as before, the youthfulness is gone (after all they are no longer adolescents) and the rawness has been tamed. The best moment on the disc is the tune "Locomotive" when ADZ really let loose and kick out the jams. There are a handful of other tunes where the mixture of pop punk and anthemic punk brings to mind the band's salad days, but the majority of the tunes are not up to snuff. However, I'd rather listen to this CD than most bands trying to imitate the oldschool Orange County sound and the cover tune of "Ramblin' Gamblin' Man" originally by Bob Seger and The Silver Bullet Band is a lot of fun. There is also a tune called "Crash and Burn" which is not listed as a cover tune but that sounds disturbingly like a NECROS tune by the same name. The album is a 'concept' project tracking a person's descent into drug addiction and self destructive behaviors.
