Destiny's End
Breathe Deep The Dark (Metal Blade Records)

By: Jeb Branin

HELSTAR was one of those power/thrash metal bands that always hovered somewhere on the edge of the scene. Their polish and melody was impressive but their song writing never really reached out and grabbed you. Their legacy is interesting as well. Some consider them legends of the genre while others (myself included) consider then rather inconsequential in the overall picture. Now James Rivera former vocalist for HELSTAR is back with his new band DESTINY'S END, and it is as tremendous step forward for him. DESTINY'S END captures the magic HELSTAR lacked. The power is there. The melody and passion are present and accounted for but most importantly the song writing is stronger. Not perfect, and at times a bit tedious ('Where Do We Go?') but nonetheless a massive improvement. Everything, for the most part, is crisp and striking. Rivera's voice has never sounded better and his versatility is impressive.
