Union 13
Why Are We Destroying Ourselves? (Epitaph Records)

By: Jeb Branin

Epitaph pulls another oldschool rabbit out of its hat. UNION13 have the edge boys and girls and not a naive preachy edge. They are what I always look for in a posi-core band because they try to improve themselves and those around them in spite of the fact they grew up surrounded by the ugliness and hopelessness of "the projects"and "the streets." They attempt to transcend their surroundings. They try to rise above. They don't let the hate and bitterness win and drag them down so that they are no better than those that they despise. Musically they are a whirlwind of hardcore and hooks. They play with the punch and vibe of INSTED yet flesh that sound out considerably with plenty of melody. They are sharp, snappy and aggressive on every tune. Sometimes letting the vocal melodies carry the tune and sometimes burying the voice in a tsunami of sound. It makes for a very effective contrast. They tap into the lifeblood on that clean late eighties hardcore sound but they are also mindful of the lessons taught in the newschool sound. The lyrics are an even mix of Spanish and English giving UNION13 some distinction. I bet you 50 bucks that these guys go down a storm live.
