Brazen
Brazen 7" (Self-Released)

By: Jeb Branin

This is one of those records that on first listen I decided I hated, then on subsequent listens realized I loved. It took awhile to grow on me but I am very glad that I gave it the chance to do so. BRAZEN play a challenging and intriguing brand of post-hardcore. Thick, slow, and distorted guitars are underscored by a smooth and steady rhythm section and tortured, although unspectacular vocals. Lots of pathos, lots of anguish, and lots or subtlety are the band's trademark. This probably could be pigeonholed as an emo record but you've got to hear it to fully appreciate the fact that a genre tag doesn't do this justice. For example, both songs on this record are more influenced by Black Sabbath flavored doom than just about anything else. In fact, the more and more I've spun this platter the more the mighty Sabbath comes to mind. Not the typical emo sound at all.
