Billy Mahonie
The Big Dig (Beggers Banquet)

By: Alex Steininger

The music is subtle, fresh, and can go from quiet to rocking. So, what's not to like, right? Well, the absence of lyrics makes the album another instrumental rock record that lures you in for a bit before you grow tired and turn it off. Billy Mahonie managed to lure me in a bit with their instrumental pop-emo-rock style. But, without words to back it up, the album drifted into the background without a second thought.

The soft, weepy-eyed "We Accept American Dollars," the slice of rock on "Yeah, Yeah, Yeah, Yeah, Yeah," and the emo-gone-arena rock of "Watching People Speaking When You Can't Hear What They're Saying" all deserve honorable mentions. But, even with their musicianship and the power behind them, they still linger on and aren't able to capture your attention after awhile.

If you're looking for something soothing, yet still rock-able to play in the background, Billy Mahonie have it covered. But if you want some good pop-emo-rock that will touch you over and over again and keep you coming back for more, than this won't win. I'll give it a C-.
