2 Originals Of Sodom (SPV/Steamhammer)

By: Jeb Branin

SPV takes a somewhat different twist on the SODOM re-issues this time. They package two CDs in one box set and call it "2 Originals Of SODOM". The first CD is "Persecution Mania" which was the band's second album and the one where they succeeded in defining their sound and catapulting themselves into the forefront of the German thrash metal scene. This may be my favorite SODOM release ever, it is certainly the one I have listened to more than any other. It is blazing fast, harsh, barbaric, crude and intense. It also was the first SODOM album with good production which allowed the full force of their music to be felt. The "Expurse Of Sodomy" maxi-single is included on this CD as bonus tracks. The second CD in the pack also has two releases on one disc making this "double pack" more like a "quadruple pack". "In The Sign Of Evil" was the debut mini-lp and although not bad, barely hinted at how good SODOM would go on to be. It was primitive sounding even in its day. The same could be said for the LP "Obsessed By Cruelty" one of their sickest and most demented records (and certainly a classic) but one of the least powerful as well due to the muddy production and underdeveloped songwriting of the band. You can't beat the "bang for the buck" this box set delivers and if you want to explore the beginnings of one of metal's most powerful bands ever, you can't pass this up.
