Dwight Twilley
Perfect World" b/w "Never Enough" (Pop The Baloon Records)

By: Gary "Pig" Gold

Here's one man who absolutely requires no introduction to any soul who knows and treasures good, far-from-old-fashioned rock'n'pop. Indeed, the Dwight Twilley Band's 1976 "Sincerely" album may have made less noise than that year's other great American debut album (by those brothers Ramone), but like Joey & Co., Dwight has stuck to his musical guns ever since - often defiantly so - despite a near quarter century full of transient trends, changing musical tastes, and tons of good (and rotten) luck.

Of course, good guys really DO finish first, and laugh last, so the current Twilley Renaissance is being perfectly ushered in with this delightful (and incredibly packaged!) single from the fine folk at Pop The Balloon. Both of these tracks are stirring, more-than-solid productions which ring strong, proud, and oh-so-true, with "Perfect World" in particular near anthem-like in its cries - no, demands - for better living through better heart-play. A powerful statement, in short, the likes of which bands such as U2 can only pretend to espouse.

On the sonic end of things, if it's not broken, don't fix it of course, and so Twilley's modus operandi (sharp, rhythmic bed-tracks set upon the drive of the acoustic guitar, above which his voice soars as wondrously as it did back in '76) is far more than merely intact, thank heavens. That said then, this, not to mention the fresh Twilley product en route over the next while, certainly demands the undivided attention of any listener out there who would like to know - or, for you older fans out there, remember - how American rock is SUPPOSED to sound.15
