The Appleseed Cast Low Level Owl: Volume I (Deep Elm Records) By: Alex Steininger

A bit more rockin' than volume 2, The Appleseed Cast's Low Level Owl: Volume I shows the rock side of the band, but doesn't abandon the softer, slower songwriting of volume 2. Rather, it hints a lot at where they go on volume 2, but with the noise and pop-based songwriting that isn't there on volume 2. This is not a rock record though. If anything, it's a bit more jangly and pop-oriented than the drawn out, simmering style of volume 2. If I had to pick, I would say volume 1 is more my style, offering up some pop songs, some buzzing guitars, and the quiet stuff. It is a more diverse, yet equally focused package. But they're both good. I'll give this a B+.
