ATW
The Lipstick Murders (Sound Pollution)

By: Jeb Branin

This one took me completely off guard. ALLERGIC TO WHORES (who seem to have settled for the far more palatable ATW as a moniker) have throttled back significantly on "The Lipstick Murders." Gone is the chaotic and blazing re-invention of 80s skatecore-meets-hatecore and in its place is a more true-to-form reflection of those same influences. Although there were definitely hooks and melodies underlying the furious assault on their last album, I wasn't prepared for what the band would sound like stripped down and smoothed out. I think it would be safe to say they are still fast but no longer furious. On the plus side, skate-core fans are going to eat this up and anyone who was into those Pushead organized compilations in the late 80s is going to feel they are coming home. On the downside, fans of contemporary extreme hardcore who creamed over the last album are going to be disappointed in the toned down music and calmed down (sometimes even sung) vocals. I admit to being a bit let down myself, although I suspect it'll grow on me considering how much I like the influences they are drawing from. I do have to congratulate the band on forgoing gore in their album art this time around.
