DJ-Kicks: Playgroup (!K7)

By: Cam Lindsay

Trevor Jackson's debut album as Playgroup was fantastic. And when you succeed in the world of electronic and dance music, the only way to celebrate is to release a mix album, like every DJ in the world has done millions of times. Thankfully, this volume of the DJ-Kicks series is really good. Of course, Jackson's style is all over this record, and since his style is so wide ranged, a little bit of everything is represented here. A little bit of old school funk (Material's discofied "Ciquir"), acid fried jazz (Nigo's "March of General") and the unexpected (Human League's "Do or Die" treated to a dub makeover). Yet, Jackson saves the best for last, giving the mix a startling jolt of energy with The Rapture's disco punk anthem "House of Jealous Lovers". This man knows his tunes. Grade: B+
