The Jayhawks Blue Earth (Ryko) By: Alex Steininger
A re-issue of the band's debut full-length, Blue Earth, a collection of demos with only minor studio tinkering, as well as three bonus tracks ("Fingernail Moon", "Two Minute Pop Song", and "Nightshade"), Ryko delivers The Jayhawks at the beginning. Monotone in a lot of ways, the songs never take a stand or jump out at you, though the songwriting is there, hinting at the strong albums to come. However, as a debut, it is solid, but it fails to grab you when you know what the band is capable of now (even without Marc Olson). I'll give it a C+.
