Bongzilla
Gateway (Relapse)

By: Jeb Branin

A band that rides a one-trick pony for as long as BONGZILLA is either gutsy or crazy? or a little of both. Without question the pot shtick is getting tired. On the other hand, redundancy is a band trademark. For example here are the opening lines to tracks 6, 7 and 8 on the new CD "Gateway." Track 6, the title track, starts; "There I sit," track seven "Keefmaster" opens; "Here we sit," and track eight "Hashdealer" begins, yes you guessed it, with, "Yeah, there we all sit." Apparently sitting and marijuana have co-curricular activities. Musically the band is still as sludge-infused and Sabbath inspired as ever and for fans of the genre there isn't much here not to like. I've listened to it several times and it never fails to pack a wallop, but to be honest it is probably the weakest of the BONGZILLA albums and barely holds its own with many in the neo-sludge wave.
