World Targets in Megadeaths (Sugar Hill Records)

By: Jeb Branin

With a band name taken from a prop in the movie Dr. Stangelove (I assume that is where it is from anyway), this is a fascinating DIY release. Musically it is electro-core with lots of harsh grindcore influenced electronics twisted around a foundation of off-kilter experimentation. It reminds me of a far less brutal and direct DATACLAST. On the merits of the music the CD barely manages to stand on its own. On the merits of the entire experience, however, it is astounding. The CD and sleeve come in the gutted remains of an old 5" floppy disc. Very good idea. Then the entire CD has an interactive interface for your computer. But it is far more than your typical video clips and website links? instead it has been programmed so that as you listen to the music your monitor puts on a corresponding show. Data, designs and general digital chaos erupt on the screen. You can also navigate a screen to control what songs play or you can control scrolling images on the screen. It's not like anything I've seen before and true originality is hard to come by in this scene so I take it when I can get it.
