The Dudoos
Specium Sommer (Sound Pollution)

By: Jeb Branin

I love to see genre labels step outside their own box. It usually causes so called "open minded" punks to blow a fuse because they just can't stand it when anything truly unexpected happens. Take Sound Pollution Records releasing the "Specium S?mmer" CD by THE DUDOOS for example. Here is a label renowned for bringing us all things extreme, raw, and raging releasing a pop-punk album (albeit a fireball of a pop punk album). My hat is off to Sound Pollution and I hurl loud guffaws toward anyone who can't handle it. Why? Simple. THE DUDOOS are incredible! They play full throttled pop that sounds like what you might expect from a marriage of TOY DOLLS and ALICE DONUT. Every note they play is as infectious as SARS and even if you don't speak a word of Japanese, you'll find yourself trying to sing along before the end of the first song "Crabb Europe." Speaking of which, that song may be the epitome of THE DUDOOS. The song starts out with an electronic harpsichord, transitions into bell chimes and still manages to kick your butt with its communicable rock n roll. This album took awhile to make it to American shores and in the meantime, THE DUDOOS have recorded another soon-to-be-classic disc of melodicore. I'm already counting down.
