Send (Pink Flag)

 The return of Wire really couldn't have come at a better time for them. What with post-punk reviving itself and the underground peeking its head up into the mainstream, Wire are in good form. After two self-released and successful EPs last year, they've given us a long awaited full-length to follow it up. Informing the audience that they are not stuck in 1977 with this record, Wire have updated their sound to deliver something that represents Wire circa 2003, which is what Send sounds like (Pink Flag fans be wary). They still keep an edge and fuse it with their artistic expression, but Send is one hell of a raucous comeback. It's a bold move on Wire's part to not give the fans what they want and record music that represents where the band is at. The result is Colin Newman and company furthering their tight-knit, angular punk sound with loud industrial noise to modernize everything. Unfortunately, the Killing Joke-ish appeal of "Nice Streets Above" isn't very effective, and should alienate more fans that intrigue them. This can be said for most of the rest of the album. Send is a disappointing record by a once great, legendary punk band. C
