Zongamin
Zongamin (XL)

By: Cam Lindsay

Zongamin (aka Susumu Mukai) is a true D.I.Y. project. Spending most of his life discovering music from all sorts of angles, Mukai has come up with Zongamin as his creative outlet - one that refuses any limitations. Fusing funk, hip-hop and dance, all with an indie aesthetic to it, Mukai never presents the listener with anything less than entertaining. His music is very busy, taking detours by fading in and out and zigzagging all over. Former single "Spiral", a track that had every club DJ licking their lips, is a fantastic mix of old school hip-hop beats and swooping electro clatter. "Serious Trouble" showcases Mukai's skill for the bass, an instrument he has mastered beautifully. The only downfall with this project is that it never features any real vocals, which could have made it an outstanding record. The end result, instead, is still a very enthusiastic record with many shining moments, but instrumentals of this kind can only charm you for so long. B
