Luke Haines And The Auteurs
Das Capital: The Songwriting Genius of... (Hut/Virgin)

By: Cam Lindsay

Shedding a whole load of negative energy throughout the 90s, The Auteurs were the perfect antidote to the chirpy Britpop scene. Led by the prolific cynic Luke Haines (who remains to be the only member now), The Auteurs have been out of the loop since the disappointing alienation of the 1999 album, How I Learned To Love The Bootboys (which Haines claims as "underrated", not the failure that it actually was). This one-off return is marked by a sort of "greatest hits" collection, chosen by Haines and re-recorded with an orchestra to give the songs a new breath of life. He's included some new songs: "Satan Wants Me", "Bugger Bognor", "The Mitford Sisters" and "Future Generation", which maintain the same high standards in lyrical showmanship. However, I think most fans will get a kick out of hearing the new renditions of favorites like the shockingly brilliant "Unsolved Child Murder", the indie-"hit" "Lenny Valentino" and the title track from his audacious Baader Meinhof side project. This well planned retrospective is a fantastic reminder or how much of a "songwriting genius" Luke Haines really is. If he isn't remembered for his idealistic Englishness and wonderfully biting wit, which will likely be the case, then justice has not been served.
