Death Cab for Cutie Transatlanticism (Barsuk Records) By: Alex Steininger
Seattle's Death Cab for Cutie's forth full-length, Transatlanticism lives up to the hype. Forging ahead with their poppy, lyrically-driven sound that indie rockers use as their new bible, front man Ben Gibbard and company deliver a stellar record of monumental proportions. From sweeping, epic rock, such as the opener, "The New Year", through the bouncy-ness of "Expo '86", and the tenderness of the daze-y piano ballad of the title track, Death Cab for Cutie deliver a breathtaking record here. Continuing on with their already well-charted path, the band matures and grows without losing sight of their humble beginnings, ensuring equal amounts of new and old. Coming off of the Postal Service record, Give Up (Sub Pop), which pairs DNTEL's Jimmy Tamborello with Gibbard, Gibbard seems refreshed and ready to stretch, delivering the rock alongside heartening cuts - blending the two and making it sound effortless. A stunning accomplishment from one of the music world's most promising stars. I'll give Transatlanticism an A.
