One Mississippi (Star Time International)

 Brendan Benson's long out-of-print 1996 Virgin Records' release One Mississippi is finally seeing the light again, re-released on Benson's current home, New York-based indie Star Time International. With the re-release comes nine bonus tracks, including the hidden track from One Mississippi ("Unknown"), six songs from the Wellfed Boys EP (Benson's backing band), and two cuts that were previously only available on the Japanese release of One Mississippi.Benson's classic pop gem, comprised of power-pop, sweet acoustic moments, and lo-fi goodness, One Mississippi is broad, much like Benson's One Mississippi follow-up, Lapalco (released in 2002 on Star Time). Here we hear Benson moving through more pop gems, cutting through them with a sense of humor as he moves through dark subjects while making the songs infectious and incredibly easy to sing along with due to their poppy presentation. And that is what makes Benson so good. One Mississippi's bonus material, coupled with the out-of-print record, make it a sure-fire choice for pop fans to pick up and marvel at. It is quite impressive. And still sounds new and cutting edge seven years after its initial release. That's impressive. I'll give it an A-.
