Slumber Party
3 (Kill Rock Stars)

By: Cam Lindsay

As black sheep in the rockin' city of Detroit, Slumber Party have more in common with the 60s era of Motown than they do with Jack or Meg. A four-piece girl group that create melodies akin to The Supremes or The Vandellas (but with proper instruments) on valium, they use minimalism and hazy, wall of sound-like production to capture a perfect sound from 30 some odd years ago. Already with two well-received albums (including the near flawless Psychedelicate, which featured The Von Bondies' Marcie Bolen as a member), 3 is surprisingly bolder than its title. For instance, "New Trouble" avoids the simple guitar/bass/drums routine for something experimental, featuring exotic organs, guitar loops and wonderfully creative sound effects courtesy of some major synth-noodling. Including some "girl talk" at the end of the track doesn't hurt the band in getting across their band name's message either. "On-T.V." travels a similar road as well, leaning more towards Spiritualized's early gospel psychedelia. Nevertheless, fans of their more Velvet Underground-obsessed strummathons will enjoy tracks like the more bluesy "Black Heart Road", the trumpeteered footstomper "Behave" and the heavenly sway of "No Sleep Tonite". Another strong effort by the Motor City's best kept secret.
