 Though a low-key member of power pop heroes New Pornographers, Dan Bejar is better known as the driving force behind Destroyer. After a glorious 2001 album, the highly praised Streethawk: A Seduction, Bejar is back with his sixth record of whimsical electric folk rock. Destroyer isn't your run of the mill singer/songwriter acoustic ballads though. There's over the top grandeur spilling out of Bejar's musical mind, resembling work out of Bowie's Berlin era in the mid-70s. Limited but percussion that shimmers when heard, subtle acoustic guitars and an overwhelming set of regal synthesizers support Bejar's introspective lyrics that reach the status of genius before the second song kicks in. Occasionally you sit and wonder just how someone can get away with such a pretentious approach to songwriting, but it's hard not love Destroyer and its beautifully absurd sounds.
