Frogpond
Count to Ten (TriStar Music)

By: Jen Brown

This all grrrrl band based in Warrensburg, Missouri was formed in1994 and recorded a demo album, 2% in october of that year. Just about two years later their major label debut album, Count To Ten was released. Count To Ten was produced by the Portland, Oregon based band Everclear's frontman Art Alexakis.

Lead singer Heidi Phillips mixes her a throaty soft voice with hard rock music creating a sound similar to Hole, but without the harsh grunge rock sound and lyrics. She has the ability to scream lyrics without making them sound rushed or contorted. Simply imagine Fiona Apple at a much faster pace with a rock group backing you up. Alexakis brought his uniquly insane sound to the album on the track "Be," a fast-paced tune, by singing backup vocals.

Frogpond proves that not all female bands need to wear tight mini skirts and tons of makeup to make it. All you really need is a unique sound, which Frogpond definitly delivers. Phillips was the creative mind behind the group, writing all the songs, including "Pretty Song," one of a few slower songs, concludes the album, and adds diversity creating an album that mixes fast and slow paced tracks.
