Threadbare
Escapist (Doghouse Records/PO Box 8946/Toledo, Ohio 43623)

By: Sean Gilchris

Escapist is the posthumous release from the Minneapollis quintet Threadbare. After releasing a 7" (on watermark) and a CD EP (also on doghouse), this final recording is somewhat of a letdown. Not because of the music, mind you, but because there are only 6 songs on here. From the pounding opening drum beat on "Error", to the hidden Misfits cover, Threadbare will blow you away with their fury. The band has become less noisy and have given their sound a more driving quality not unlike Quicksand. Threadbare seem to have let a bit of experimentation into their music as on "Lesser Evils" where singer Brian Lovro narrates a story about evil voices he hears at a younger age. The song is chilling when the chorus kicks in with Lovro in the background screaming "we want the son!". The production on Escapist is excellent allowing every instrument to be heard loudly and clearly. Although it's hard to understand at times what Lovro is actually screaming, his screams are actually quite emotional and don't grate on the ears. It's too bad this band didn't carry on as I am sure their popularity would have increased considerably after such strong releases. They are missed.
