My Friend Stephanie
All The Pieces (Bulletproof Music)

By: Alex Steininger

My Friend Stephanie is a power pop band with hooks that will draw your attention. When I first put this band in I wasn't expecting much. I disregarded them as another rock band that wanted to be another Nirvana. And that's just from looking at the disc. But when I put it in I was pleasantly surprised. The first song was powerful, and contained the most important thing a rock song should have...HOOKS! Powerful hooks that draw your attention, and force you to listen. I kept listening, and they kept providing the hooks. Songs like "How Are You," "See You Again," and "Tell You" combined a nice amount of rock with some addicting pop.

My Friend Stephanie sounds best when they are rocking out with the pop sensation underneath them. When they drop the rock and go for straight, light pop melodies they fall flat and sound boring and dole. "Grizzly" and "In My Life" are perfect examples of this. They just don't work. Get abrasive, add the pop in, and you have a good song. Lose the tension, and get mellow, and it just doesn't work.

I'll give this disc a B-. It had some really great moments, let me tell you. But it also had some bad moments. And it had a lot of mediocre stuff as well. They need to concentrate on building more power pop songs, and forget about the light and fluffy pop material.
