The Hunger
Cinematic Superthug (Universal Records)

By: Alex Steininger

The Hunger are an industrial/rock band from Houston, Texas. Centered around the sibling creativity of Thomas and Jeff Wilson, they take a deep drive through their lives musically, as well as lyrically. On their latest album, CINEMATIC SUPERTHUG, they serve up thirteen tracks that will put any fan of industrial music in their place.

The CD kicks off with "Free," a head on attack of industrial and rock. Using enough keyboards to be considered industrial, they also use enough raw guitar riffs and crunchy bass lines to melt away into the hard rock genre. But it doesn't stop at just that. The vocals can go soft, they can sing, and they can scream. The title track also demonstrates how they can be melodic on top of loud. Each song thereafter continues the great trend of bringing you loud guitars, lots of keyboards, hard hitting drums, and chunky bass. The vocals always add strength to a song, going from pleasant to rough and all the way back to melodic and thrilling. "Hey God" also shows the bands ability to tone down things a bit and go heavily melodic. Each song on this album is very strong, and they never let the listener down. They remain constant all the way through, and bring you deeper into a world of intensity with each track.

No matter what theses guys put their minds too, they always come up with a unique, fresh blend of musical ideas and act upon them. Their music is powerful and drenched in real-life, giving it a very desirable feeling. I recommend this CD to anyone who is into industrial or hard rock. I'll give this CD an A-.
