Mojo Nixon
Gadzooks!!! (The Homemade Bootleg) (Needletime)

By: GARY PIG GOLD

"Good time" music rarely sounds as good as when it's pouring from the mouth of a true-blue gifted goof like Mr. Nixon, and this hare collection of demos, out-takes, compilation appearances and self-described cheese sessions defies any listener to partake without at least once leaping skyward in fits of unbridled, unbuttoned joy. Packed, as any Mojo offering, with sentiments both profound ("High School Is A Prison") and precipitative ("Bring Me The Head Of David Geffen"), "Gadzooks!!!" also lets loose with at least two songs ("Winnebago Warrior" and especially "I'm Drunk") that reduce to lint most of what's now ridiculously being tagged "alt.country", and in "Go Back Home" actually presents a selection worthy of being a Bonus Track on the next "Led Zep III" re-issue. Then just when you think you've heard - and possibly even HURLED - it all, this disc closes with a surprisingly heartfelt tribute to NASCAR great Richard Petty, recorded in the actual Sun Studios in Memphis with, I kid you knot, a vacuum cleaner hose spinning overhead for that authentic Indy 2001 effect. Ahh, Mojo! So much for all those Godzilla box sets: HERE'S a collection far more worthy of your hard-earned change.
