Burning Airlines Carnival 7" (Desoto Records -- P.O. Box 60335/Washington, DC 20039) By: Sean
This is the debut 7" from this Washington, DC trio. Burning Airlines features J. Robbins (guitar/vocals ex- Jawbox/Government Issue), Bill Barbot (bass/vocals ex-Jawbox), and Pete Moffett (drums/vocals ex-Government Issue/Wool). The first song featured here is Scissoring which comes bashing in with heavy drums then settles into a nice bass/drum groove and Robbins trademark baritone. You thought Dave Grohl was the best rock drummer? Think again. Moffet's heavy, precise playing is amazing. Jawbox always had an ear for a catchy melody and this new band is no exception. With it's catchy chorus, dissonant guitar, and harmony vocals, Carnival is the best song on this EP. Scissoring is the b-side with a more upbeat approach, guitar harmonics, and effects on the bass. Fans of the members prior bands will no doubt love this as will anyone wanting to hear a truly impressive band that is already earning rave reviews. 2 of the best songs I have heard in a very long time. Buy this.
