Genesis
Archive 1967-1975 [4 cd box set] (Atlantic Records)

By: Sean

Fans of Genesis have been dying for this 4 cd set to see the light of day after it was pushed back last year. Is it worth the wait? Most definitely. It's a given that most of the bands' fans do not know much about the Peter Gabriel era Genesis and only know them from the Phil Collins sung hits. The first 2 cd's in the set are a full live recording of "The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway", the double concept album from 1974 before Gabriel quit a year later. The recording of this show is excellent although some of Gabriel's vocals had to be overdubbed last year, due to the singer wearing outrageous costumes that were tough to get microphones close to. The 2 cd's tell the amusing story of Rael and his adventures in New York City. The music is quite complicated and eerie. Anyone wanting to know where Radiohead's "Ok Computer" got it's influence from need look no further. The third disc comprises more live performances from the 1973 tour for Selling England By The Pound. It features one of the bands best live staples, the 23 minute Supper's Ready. There's also a blistering live version of Dancing With The Moonlit Knight which showcases some of Phil Collins most impressive drumming ever. There's also a few other rarities including Happy The Man, and Twlight Alehouse. The fourth disc is full of demos spanning from 1967 to 1970 before Collins or guitarist Steve Hackett were in the band. The songs on here are more in the style of early Bee Gee's/acoustic Beatles and actually have some nice melodies. It should also be noted that due to the live "Lamb" recording taking up tape, the band re-recorded the last song "It" and it sounds just as good as the '74 version. This is really worth your money and a very enjoyable listening experience. Genesis' music was always very impassioned and quite odd (in a good way!) and this box set drives home the fact that they were some of the most talented musicians, and one of the best and most original bands of our time.
