Johnny Winter
Live In NYC '97 (Pointblank)

By: Geoff Melton

Five years after the release of his last studio album, legendary Texas bluesman Johnny Winter is back with Live In NYC '97. Recorded at The Bottom Line over two nights in April of last year, Live In NYC '97 showcases nine tunes handpicked by Winter after asking members of his fan club what they'd like to hear on a live album. Between the two, they've done an excellent job, resulting in a solid, well-produced set that showcases his diverse talent through upbeat Texas-style boogie tunes like "Sen-Sa-Shun/Got My Mojo Working" and "She Likes To Boogie Real Low", an excellent slow blues cover of Ray Charles' "Black Jack", rockers like "Just A Little Bit" and "Johnny Guitar", and "The Sun Is Shining" and "The Sky Is Crying", a couple of tunes highlighting his slide guitar work. Live In NYC '97 is a perfect example of why Johnny Winter is considered a legend.
