Benumb
Soul of the Martyr (Relapse Records)

By: Jeb Branin

Slap-A-Ham alums and mainstays of the extreme hardcore underground, BENUMB have made the jump to super-indie status with the release of this debut full length. The 35 tracks here show off the diversity of this band with everything from sludge to grind to power violence. 21 of the tunes are new for this release and the rest are collected from various 7"ers. There is even a bonus track that features their entire set from the 1997 Slap-A-Ham Fiesta Grande - so it's actually eight tracks in one. I was fortunate enough to catch that show and BENUMB were on fire. Their music is frantic and pulverizing one minute then plodding and crushing the next. They shoot for the extreme in everything and they are superb marksmen.
