Comrades
Comrades 7" (S.O.A. Records)

By: Jeb Branin

Although this Italian band recorded this record after they had broken up and at this point have been gone for three years, it is still an essential musical milestone for those of us who are fans of both straight edge and grindcore. With MONSTER X being the possible exception, COMRADES were one of the first bands to combine the sXe and grind. Their attitude, anger and pointed commentary were indicative of sXe while their guttural vocals and pulverizing musical excess borrowed heavily from grind. Comrades were not as heavy and throbbing as MONSTER X, choosing instead for a more frantic and loose approach. On stage they wore featureless masks as a statement on the oppressive nature of the scene and its dehumanizing of people. A mandatory release whether your taste be Italian core, grind, or edge.
