Fates Warning
Still Life 2xCD (Metalblade Records)

By: Jeb Branin

When you are looking at a fifteen year career for a progressive metal band the question that comes to mind is; "Can the progressive progress?" Over the years the answer for FATES WARNING is a resounding 'Yes'. Early albums in the bands career were interesting but limited in their scope and, frankly, in their appeal. But with each album the band mutated and changed, fine tuning their sound and honing their approach. A key factor in their ability to do this was a fairly constant rotation of band members, each better than their predecessor and each broadening the song writing capabilities of the band. Now a staple in the progressive metal scene, FATES WARNING unleash this two disc live retrospective. Although their new material is predominant (including "A Pleasant Shade of Gray" in its entirety) and the focus of the whole project is definitely forward looking, rather than backward, this album still has tunes from most of the bands "eras" and is a wonderful celebration of true underground stalwarts. Studio quality production (overdubs anyone?) keep the ultra- clean F.W. sound fully intact.
