Gothic Sex
Laments (Repulse Records)

By: Jeb Branin

For many types of music there is a rather imposing threshold between good and bad. In other words if it isn't done right it isn't tolerable. It's like this... With punk rock, even bands who are not very good can be enjoyable simply because it is the nature of the music to overcome blandness and in some cases actually thrive on it (can you say SEX PISTOLS?). However, with music like ska and gothic, there is no similar flexibility. It is either good or it is terrible. There is no middle of the road. There is no room for run of the mill. No room for error... and GOTHIC SEX are nothing if not error. They are a band without focus or purpose. Their music is derivative and their image is asinine. Their decade long history can't salvage them and is only marginally impressive because I can't help but wonder, "What good is the longevity of mediocrity?" Precious little, I'm afraid. They take what bands like 45 GRAVE did right and combine it with what bands like the interminable GENITORTURERS did oh-so- wrong and the result is disaster. The music only occasionally gets interesting and, as stated before, that doesn't cut it when you are trying to ply your trade in gothic. To the band's credit there is some mystery in the esoteric message of the lyrics but that is only of very little consequence.
