 When I first heard the self released debut disc by PUYA I knew they were going to be snatched up by an enthusiastic label. I didn't quite realize that label was going to be the massive MCA. The morality of major labels aside, I'm thrilled for this band. They are one of those truly brave bands who is pioneering a new conglomerate sound. Mixing bruising hardcore, neo-metal, visceral hip hop, reggae, and most importantly salsa and other Latino music, they jump all over the musical map but still manage to provide a cohesiveness to the whole package. Much of that unification of diverse sounds is via their spicy rhythms and fiery passion. Dismiss it as an ethnic cliche if you must, but Latin music is some of the most passionate and alive music on the planet. It is the aural equivalent of sex... and PUYA is the climax. Be warned if you are insightful enough to ad this disc to your collection you better have an open mind and diverse tastes in music. One minute PUYA are gently swaying to a seductive beat and the next they are beating the living hell out of you with grating, distorted hardcore violence. If you can stand the heat boys and girls you won't be disappointed.
