Smack
On You (Amsterdamned Records)

By: Chris Paules

This album brings back sounds reminiscent of the 80's glam rock heyday. Originally recorded between 1984-1986, this Finland based act churned out traditional rock and roll tunes with a twist of glam and a shot of Jack Daniel's. You can hear it in their opening track "Good Morning Headache," an alcohol filled hangover number. The similar "alcoholic" vein runs through this disc. You can hear a bit of Guns N' Roses, perhaps even a bit of Mudhoney in the music...but seeing as how this band was long gone before these bands started, influence perhaps? The guitar work is perfectly 80's, with a bit more of the blues thrown in. Tracks like "Through The Glass" and "Run Rabbit Run" continue with the traditional rock and roll sound while songs such as "Cemetery Walls" begin with more of an eastern feel. The only thing that struck me wrong about the album is that for the most part, the songs were quite derivative of each other. But with a few standout tracks this album rates well with other albums of the 80's rock heyday. From what the liner notes told, these boys partied hard and drank hard. Perhaps that is what took the life of Smack frontman Claude, to whom the album is dedicated to. However his memory will live on in this work. I'll give this album a C for style.
