Kindly Stop For Me (TVT Records)

By: Alex Steininger

Led by the beautiful voice and songwriting talents of Marydee Reynolds, Chainsuck helps re-invent themselves from an industrial band to a pop-industrial act with KINDLY STOP FOR ME. The album has a sweet pop heart pulsating beneath the darker scenery of the industrial influences that help give the band their twist. Often though, the songs get stuck working the pop and industrial together, equating to a pop song with no movement, too dark to hook you, and too light to really make you move.

Marydee has a powerful voice and a good lyrical sense, which helps give the band a nice edge. The songs are structured well and wrap around her voice nicely. The one thing that holds the record back is the fact that instead of carrying through with a provocative pop hook or a sneering industrial drive, the band opts to keep both of them together, never venturing too far out into one territory.

The band is at their best on tracks like "Pornstar," "Murder of a Heart," "Razors and Decay," and "Blood Across the Sun." But, even then, they still lack a key ingredient to really get you to fall deep into their songs. This just might be a transitional record where they explore and find out what works for them and then blow you away with their next one, because they seem to have a lot of potential. But, they fall flat here. I'll give the album a C+.
