Messages in Blood - The Early Years (Displeased Records)

By: Jeb Branin

WHIPLASH were one of the most underrated thrash metal bands of the mid to late eighties, never managing to rise above cult status. Ironically in the nineties that cult status has served them well and elevated them to almost legendary status amongst diehard metalheads - both young and old. The intensity and visceral nature of WHIPLASH's music is as in demand today as it was 15 years ago. "Messages In Blood" is testament to that fact. This album consists of 9 demo tracks and 10 live tracks from the band's early days. It is as much a history lesson for the uninitiated (as in too young to remember) as it is a trip back in time for us old farts. WHIPLASH played pure underground thrash/speed metal with lots of raw power and rough edges. They were the embodiment of the underground sound that lurked beneath the superstar status of bands like METALLICA, ANTHRAX, SLAYER, and MEGADETH. They were a band more akin to the likes of the mighty EXCITER. They were one of the bands that could never (or would never) get clean enough or smooth enough to appeal to the masses.
