DJ DB Presents Shades of Technology: A Drum and Bass Journey (F-111 Records)

By: Alex Steininger

DJ DB could most certainly be called one of the main proprietors of the breakbeat hardcore genre. From DJ, promoter, A&R guy, and entrepreneur (co-founding NASA, the legendary Manhattan club, in 1992), DJ DB has proven himself time and time again as a relentless soldier of the breakbeat army trying to get the music the recognition and support it warrants. Unfortunately, A DRUM AND BASS JOURNEY is a action-less breakbeat/dance/electronica album that fails to push any limits and stagnates throughout.

The music doesn't have any muscles. It seems lackluster and void of something throughout. Beating a dead horse into the ground, it constantly re-plays the same beats over and over again, trying to get you charged, but missing the mark completely. The album is a stereotypical, run-of-the-mill electronica album that seems to fall short in every way. It has its moments, like the guest female vocals that liven it up, but it doesn't go much further than that.

DJ DB's contributions to breakbeat and the success of dance/electronica music in the U.S. are undeniable. Unfortunately, he can't turn his business skills and A&R ear into something that works on his own project. I'll give it a D.
